"Investigation continues in death of two"

Irene and a 16 year old friend "were fatally injured at 7:15 last night (2-24-1933) when hit by an automobile on the East Lincoln Avenue road, two and a quarter miles east of Goshen." Irene's sister, 17 year old Virginia and another 15 year old girl "suffered slight injuries." "The Chupp girl [Irene] taken to the Goshen Hospital in the Culp ambulance, died there at about 8:30. On the way to school, the four girls, accompanied by [two male friends] were walking on the pavement on their way to the Rensberger school, two and a half miles east of Goshen, when the accident occurred. They were going there to attend a play given by former students of the school, and a car struck them [driven by a 21 year old male Mr. Miller also bound for the school] three-quarters of a mile east of Goshen on the Fish lake road. Miller...said that the four girls and two boys were walking abreast on the right side of the pavement, the two girls who were killed being at about the center of the highway. Coroner O.E. Wilson was called to Goshen shortly after the accident and he was again at the sheriff's office in Goshen this morning completing his inquiry into the tragedy. Miller...estimated the speed of his coupe at the time of the accident as between 45 and 50 miles an hour. 'It was raining hard,' Miller said. 'I was not 10 feet away when I saw the six young people walking abreast on the pavement ahead of my car. They were on the pavement ahead of my car. They were on the right side of the pavement mainly, but the two girls on the left side were near the center line. I do not know wheter I sounded my horn. I swerved to the left. My car hit the two girls on the left of the line. I stopped my car within 125 feet, got out and went back. It was the first accident I have ever been involved in. My brakes were in good shape, and my windshield wiper was working.' [A 23 year old Mr. Duker who stopped to help] told the coroner of having passed the six young persons a few minutes before the accident...The Chupp girl suffered a basal skull fracture...Irene Chupp is survived by her parents, three brothers...and two sisters. She was a sophomore in the Goshen High School. Funeral services...held Monday (2-27-1933) afternoon at 2:30 at the Culp Funeral home...Burial...in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Coroner Wilson said he did not expect to be ready to return a verdict in the case until Monday. Miller, after giving his statement to the coroner last night, was released."
