Mary Electa Guernsey was born in Bath, Steuben county, New York, a daughter of Joel and Martha (Bishop) Guernsey. She moved with her parents to Manistee county, Michigan, around 1864, where they settled on a farm in Onekama township.
Mary married William John Heckathorn (b. 1850 Lawrence co., Pennsylvania) on 17 Apr. 1877 at Onekama.
Mary died of typhoid malaria on 2 May 1882 in Onekama, at the age of 29 years, 4 days, and was buried in a lot purchased by William J. Heckathorn adjacent to that owned by her father, Joel Guernsey, in the Bertelson cemetery.
