Joel Guernsey, son of William S. and Anthea Guernsey, was born in 1810 at the "New Jerusalem" religious colony of Jemima Wilkinson in Yates county, New York.

He married, about 1850, Martha H. Bishop, and they were the parents of four children: Lucy Bishop, Mary Electa, William H. and Robert R. Guernsey, all born in Bath, Steuben county, New York.

Joel moved with his family to Manistee county, Michigan, having in 1864 purchased 160 acres under the Homestead Act, located in section 13 of Onekama township, bordering Bear Lake township to the east. He was elected the first clerk of Onekama Township at its first meeting in Apr. 1867 at Portage.

Martha Guernsey died on the farm in Onekama township in 1882. Joel died at the Manistee county poor farm in 1894 at the age of 84. Although there are no stones or markers for either of them at the Bertelson cemetery, the cemetery records do show their burials there.
