Charles L. Sebastian was born in Ohio about 1845, the son of Milton Sebastian (1804, KY-1875, MO) and Elizabeth Hughes. By 1850 he was living with his parents in St. Francois County, Missouri (1850, 1860, 1870 US Census). During the Civil War he enlisted as a private and was mustered into Company A, 3rd Missouri State Militia Cavalry, March 1, 1862. He was mustered out when it was disbanded in February 1863. He then re-enlisted for 3 years on December 1, 1864, and was mustered into Company C, 14th Missouri Cavalry. He was mustered out in 1865. He married Selina Jane Poston in St. Genevieve County, Missouri, May 9, 1871. After his father's death in 1875 he moved to Los Angeles County, California, where he was living with Selina, four children, and his mother at La Ballona (now Culver City and Venice) in 1880 (1880 US Census). He was a member of Frank Bartlett Post, No. 6, and John A. Logan Post, No. 29, Grand Army of the Republic. His name appeared on a list of Union veterans whose graves were decorated on Memorial Day 1889 (Los Angeles Times, May 30, 1889). Selina filed for a Civil War widow's pension at Los Angeles September 9, 1891, and received certificate No. 350,467.
