Civil War: Company A, 2nd Kansas Cavalry

James Angus may have been the son of John Angus, born in 1806 in Scotland and Julia Ann House, born about 1810, and the brother of John Peter Angus (1838-1907). James was a resident at Atchison, Kansas, when he enlisted as a private for 3 years at Leavenworth, Kansas, on February 22, 1862. That same day he was mustered into Company A, 2nd Kansas Cavalry. Private Angus was mustered out at Leavenworth, Kansas, May 8, 1865 (some records state July 19, 1865). He applied for a Civil War veteran disability pension on February 3, 1885, and received certificate No. 503,168. He was a plasterer residing at San Antonio, Texas, when he was admitted to the Central Branch, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, at Dayton, Ohio, on October 14, 1890. He was discharged from the soldiers' home at his own request on March 30, 1893. He then headed west to Los Angeles, California, where he registered to vote on July 8, 1896 (1896 Los Angeles Great Register). He became a member of John A. Logan Post, No. 29, Grand Army of the Republic. James Angus was buried by his Grand Army comrades in Evergreen Cemetery after his death at Los Angeles on December 23, 1900.
