Samuel was the first of 9 children born to James Alexander Walkup and Margaret Nancy (Pickens). His siblings were John b.1763, Martha b. 1766, Israel born 1768, William born 1770, Agnes Nancy b. 1774, Joseph b. 1776, Robert b. 1780, and Margaret b. 1783. Samuel was a Private in the Revolutionary War with the North Carolina militia. He joined the war after the English attacked and burned his father's farm and belongings. On Feb 1, 1780 he married Elizabeth Guthrie and settled in Madison County, Kentucky. To this union were born 6 children: Margaret b. 1780, William Guthrie b. 1786, Mary "Polly" b. 1790, Robert Alexander b. 1791, Samuel Jr. b. 1793 (my 3rd Great Grandfather) and James who died along with his mother in childbirth, 1797. On Aug 4, 1801 Samuel married secondly, Nancy Patterson and had 8 more children. Samuel lived to be 92 years, 7 months, and 7 days. He is my 4th Great Grandfather. He's buried at Walkup Cemetery, Mooreland Dairy Farm, Madison Co, Ky close to Berea, KY.
