Born in Germany and immigrated to the United States ~1891-1893. According to family history, he was born in the Harz Mountain district and crossed the ocean as a stow-away. US census records state he was from Hanover.

Family history also says that he served in the Boer War and the Spanish American War. He is buried in the Spanish-American War section of Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery and military records show that he served as a private in Company C, 2nd U.S. Volunteer Cavalry ("Co. C. 2 U.S V. Cal."), also known as Torrey's Rough Riders.

Also according to family history, his American family contacted his German family when he died to let them know of his passing, and the response was "He died the day he left home".

Settled in St. Louis, Missouri by 1900. Married Elizabeth Weber ca. 1904, when she was 15 y.o. and had been living in Ford City, Pennsylvania with her family.
