Harry James Ewing was the son of Charles W. Ewing, Sr. and Ruby (Bray) Ewing. He attended rural Forest Mills schools. On November 5, 1938 he married Charlene Webster. The later divorced. On January 18, 1953 he married Agnes Kriz at the Methodist Church in Dubuque, Iowa. Agnes died in 1975.

Harry worked in lumber mills as a sawyer in Monticello, Cascade, Monona, Cedar Rapids, Oxford Junction, Tama, and Dows, Iowa. He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles in Tama and Mississippi Valley Sportsman's Club of Lansing, Iowa.

He died Sunday, March 25, 1990 at the Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, Iowa. Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 28 at Martin Funeral Chapel in Waukon, with Pastor Verdon Swenson officiating. Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Tama, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Wesley, two granddaughters, and three brothers, Willis Ewing, Charles Ewing, Jr., and Arthur Ewing.

Harry was survived by a son, Donald Ewing of Lansing, Iowa, and 3 daughters, Denise (Gene) Ribby of Montour, Iowa, Dixie (Bruce) Potter of Tama, Iowa, and Jacque (Charles) Buchanan of South Beloit, Illinois; 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Kenneth Ewing of Waukon, Iowa, and Keith Ewing of Corvalis, Oregon and 2 sisters, Ruth (Keith) Bloxham of Waukon, Iowa and Helen (James) May of Dallas, Texas.
