COL. HUGGINS, EX-POLITICAL LEADER, DIES

Colonel M. Bullard,Sr., 80, planter and livestock dealer of 208 Brockington Street, Timmonsville, died Saturday afternoon at 4:20 o'clock in his residence after a brief illness.

For over 30 years, Col. Huggins was a resident of Timmonsville where he was a leader in civic, political and business affairs.

Funeral services will be conducted in the residence at 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon by the Reverand Rufus Coffey, pastor of the Sourthern Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Byrd Cemetery.

Col. Huggins was born in Florence Co., June 23, 1876, a son of the late James Henry and Louisa Jones Huggins of Timmonsville. He was a mwember and a steward of the Southern Methodist Church.

He served for three terms in the South Carolina General Assembly where he was instrumental in passing the law furnishing free text books for students in the public schools of the state.

He was a former member of the City Council of Timmonsville and served several terms as commissioner for Florence County. During Governor Olin D. Johnson's term of office he was appointed to the governor's staff.

He is survived by three daughters, Miss Mildred Huggins of Timmonsville and Miss Sara Huggins and Miss Nettielee Huggins of Washington; five sons. Ernest Huggins of Johnsonville, Clarence Huggins of Sumter, Herbert Huggins and James Huggins of Timmonsville and Jesse Huggins of Cameron; several half-brothers and half-sisters; 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
