Alton was born in Soso, Mississippi, before his family moved to Detroit, Michigan. He was living in Hamtramck, when he was drafted in the Marines 19 January 1966 by Selective Service Board #91 of Detroit.
When Alton arrived in Vietnam, he was assigned to Mike Company, 3rd Battalion.
9th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. Mike Company was on a patrol 5 kilometers south southwest of Con Thien (Hill 158), when the Marines were engaged by hostile forces. Alton died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds to the chest, abdomen, both arms and legs from hostile automatic weapons fire.
Tour of duty unknown.
Survived by his parents, Arviss and Leola Smith of 59 Tuxedo, Highland Park, Michigan.
