Mr. John Paul Ellis, age 92, died on Friday, October 16, 2009 at the Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility. The native and lifelong resident of Bulloch County was the owner and operator of Hilltop Grocery Store and Ellis Food Store in Hopeulikit. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served in World War II aboard the carrier USS Charger. Mr. Ellis returned to the U.S. after the war aboard the Queen Elizabeth to New York and declined a plane ride and chose to hitch-hike instead. After returning from the war he then began his farming as well as operating the food store. Mr. John Paul ran for a seat on the Bulloch County Commissioners in the 50's, won the election and remained a member for over 25 years. Mr. Ellis was a county commissioner under Governors' Marvin Griffin, S. Ernest Vandiver, Carl E. Sanders, Lester Maddox, George Busbee and Jimmy Carter. He was instumental in obtaining funding for paving many of the roads in Bulloch County. He was honored in 2007 to have a portion of Highway 80 named in his honor. He was a member of the Portal Hunting Club. Mr. Ellis and his son, Ben Grayson, were awarded the Ogeechee River Valley soil and water conservationists of the year in 1994. Mr. Ellis was an active member of the Friendship Baptist Church. The Ellis family would like to recognize and give special thanks for the caregivers who assisted them.

Surviving are his wife of 70 years Beatrice Beasley Ellis of Statesboro; two daughters and sons-in-law Janice and Johnny (Boss) Lanier of Twin City, GA and Connie and David Mathis of Statesboro; three sons and two daughters-in-law John Wendell and Pam Ellis of Statesboro, Grayson and Becky Ellis of Statesboro and John Paul Ellis, Jr. of Statesboro; a brother and sister-in-law Lannie and Lavaughn Ellis of Statesboro; a sister-in-law Betty M. Ellis of Statesboro; 13 grandchildren Sonia (Ozzie) Fail, Wendi (Glen) Womack, Layna (Joshua) Medlinger, John Wendell (Jay) Ellis, William (Meredith) Calcote, John J. (Kellie) Lanier, Jana (David) Dominy, Tara Ellis, Benji Ellis, Marc Ellis, Andy (Angela) Rice, Matt Mathis, Jason (Mandy) Ellis and Jamey Ellis; 20 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The visitation will be held on Sunday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church.

The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be the grandsons.

Honorary pallbearers will be the members past and present of the Bulloch County Commissioners and the Portal Hunting Club.
