Joseph Gregurech

ZEIGLER -- Joseph Gregurech, 88, of Wentzville, Mo., formerly of Zeigler, passed away Monday, Nov. 21, 2011, in Delmar Gardens Nursing Home in O'Fallon.

Joseph was born June 13, 1923, in Zeigler to John and Katie (Martinaga) Gregurech.

He married the love of his life, Betty Brown of West Frankfort, on Jan. 21, 1953, in Chicago. She survives in Wentzville.

Other survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Joann and David Sulltrop of Wentzville; and a brother, Steve Gregurech of Zeigler.

Mr. Gregurech was of Catholic faith. He was an Army Air Corps veteran, 1st Lieutenant P-51 fighter pilot with the 348th Fighter Group, 340th Fighter Squadron of World War II, flying in more than 100 missions in the Bismarck Archipelago, Southern Philippines, Luzon, Ari Offensive Japan and Asiatic Pacific Theatre Campaigns. He received the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon with four bronze stars, Air Medal with one oak leaf cluster and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star among other decorations for his service. Joseph retired from McDonald Douglas in 1987 where he was a design engineer specializing in the cockpit design of the F-15, earning him the nickname, "Mr. F-15."

Services for Mr. Gregurech will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 25, in Zeigler Cemetery with Father Trevor Murry officiating. Military honors courtesy of Zeigler and West Frankfort American Legions, West Frankfort VFW and Marion National Guard Flag Detail will be accorded. There will be no visitation. Family and friends are asked to gather at the cemetery before the services.
