SHREVEPORT, LA - Funeral services celebrating the life of Cpl. (Ret.) John T. Williams will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at Broadmoor Baptist Church with Dr. Tom Harrison officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Park West Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home.
Cpl. (Ret.) John T. Williams was born on June 1, 1923. He entered service in the U.S. Army February 13, 1943 and served as a range setter in the 555th Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion attached to the 104th Infantry Division. His unit started in Belgium and ended up about 60 miles outside of Berlin while the Russians took it. His unit shot down a confirmed 28 German aircraft and participated in the spearhead with the 3rd Armored around the Ruhr valley. His unit served for a consecutive 195 days in the allied advance towards Germany and participated in the liberation of the Nordhausen concentration camp. Cpl. Williams left the army on February 26, 1946 and eventually settled in Shreveport, Louisiana. On November 11, 2006 his battalion was honored with a breakfast at the White House with President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush . John was a 50 year member of Broadmoor Baptist church where he served as a Deacon.
John is preceded in death by wife of 41 years, Nan Short Williams and a grandson, Whitney Austin Rutherford.
Survivors include one brother, C.H. 'Pete' Williams, Children, Joann Rutherford and husband Art, John Williams and wife Gena, Jane Haddox and husband Terry, Nancy Delamater and husband Pat; 5 grandchildren, Brittnye Schroeder and husband Brant, Ragan Rutherford and wife Morgan, Kimberly Williams, Trey Delamater, Jake Delamater, and one great-grandson, Beckett Schroeder.
