Shreveport, LA - Funeral services for Mr. Pete Williams, 98, will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 26, 2013, in the chapel of Osborn Funeral Home. Officiating will be Dr. Scott L. Tatum assisted by Dr. Chuck Pourciau and Dr. Larry Williams. Interment will follow at Forest Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Monday, February 25, at Osborn.
Mr. Williams died on Friday, February 22, 2013, in Shreveport, LA following a lengthy illness. He was born in Bryceland, LA on June 16, 1914.
He accepted Christ in Bryceland Baptist Church and was baptized in Williams' Creek. He graduated valedictorian from Bryceland High School and attended Centenary College on a basketball scholarship. He was drafted into World War II. He applied to Officers' Candidate School, so he could return to the states and marry Ruth Boddie, who was his wife for 54 years. After he returned from the war, he purchased the Broadmoor Esso Service Station. He was very active in the Broadmoor Baptist Church where he served the Lord as chairman of the Board of Deacons and as a Sunday School teacher. Later, he felt the call to join the Gideons. He distributed Bibles and spoke for the Gideons for as long as his health permitted. He was a very devoted husband and father and his children never had a doubt that he was the spiritual leader as commanded by God. He was strongly committed to God and his family and that made it easy for his wife to be submissive and his children to come to know the Lord at an early age.
Mr. Williams was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Boddie Williams; his parents, Tom and Mattie Williams; his brothers, Clinton Williams and John Williams; and his sisters, Dorothy Towns, Gwen Boddie Gloer and Nina Hall.
He is survived by his daughters, Jan Mathis and Sharon Williams; his son-in-law, Jim Mathis; his grandchildren, Brian Mathis and wife, Stephanie and Elaine Barnard; and his great-grandchildren, Peyton Mathis, Wesley Mathis and Caleb Mathis. Pallbearers will be Jim Mathis, Brian Mathis, Peyton Mathis, Brook Boddie, Mark Milam and Paul Patton.
