GILBERT EUGENE "GENE" ALDRICH
Gilbert Eugene "Gene" Aldrich, 97, died at Lassen Community Hospital Annex in Susanville on July 15, 1996.
He was born in Knight's Landing on March 2, 1899 and had been a Lassen County resident for 85 years.
He was involved in the lumber industry most of his life. In 1914, he went to work for the Red River Lumber Company in Westwood. During World War I, he served in the US Army in France. Later, he returned to Lassen County to work for the Fruit Growers Supply Co. In 1937 Gene and his wife, Leota (Lee), became owners of The Shanty, the first drive-through restaurant in Lassen County. Gene continued to work days at Fruit Growers, and nights at The Shanty. In 1941 he resigned from the Fruit Growers and went to work for an electrical contractor. After the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor, he went there to rebuild what had been destroyed. In 1943, he moved back to Susanville, working again for Fruit Growers. In 1948, he moved to Westwood to oversee not only the mill, but the entire town. In 195, he moved back to Susanville, and retired in 1963. At age 64, he move to Sonora to help build a new mill. He was one of the last surviving veterans of World War I in Lassen County.
He was a member, and held offices, in the Elks, American Legion, International order of Hoo-Hoos, Oddfellows, and VFW. He was also past president of the Rotary Club in Westwood. Survivors include his son, Gilbert Aldrich Jr., of Olympia, Wash; his daughters, Donna Potorf of El Dorado Hills, and Bonnie Bridges of Standish; four grandchildren and eight grandchildren.
Services were held Saturday, July 20. Internment followed in Lassen Cemetery.
