Gilbert Eugene Aldrich, Jr
Olympia, Washington - Gilbert Eugene Aldrich, Jr. was born in Susanville, Calif. on May 8, 1933. After serving as senior class president, he enlisted in the United States Navy (1951 - 1954) and served as a Communications Technician with top secret clearance. He was stationed in Japan, the beauty and culture of which influenced him for the rest of his life. He had a successful and rewarding career in Communications and Management, starting with Pacific Telephone Company in California where he held various positions in Operations, Engineering and Planning. In 1966, Gil moved his family to Hawaii and worked for Hawaiian Telephone Company as Traffic Director, eventually becoming Vice President of Marketing and Customer Service. In 1985, he moved to Indiana as Vice President of Marketing and Business Planning for Midwestern Telephone Operations. In 1986 he became Vice President - General Manager of GTE Midwest (before it became Verizon), headquartered in Iowa.
Gil retired in 1989 at age 57 and found his forever home in the Ken Lake community of Olympia, Washington, where he spent the last 30 + years enjoying a rich, fulfilling and active life. He loved traveling world-wide and having grandchildren visit in the summertime. He was always involved in civic activities and organizations wherever he lived. In Olympia he spent 5 plus years as a Patrolman, Captain and Commander of the Olympia Harbor Patrol; was a Captain and member in Elks as well as an member in American Legion; was a Master Gardener volunteer, and a board member of Let's Dance. Traveling, dancing, reading, sports, body surfing, movies and going out for meals with family were his favorite things to do.
Gilbert Eugene Aldrich Jr. passed away on February 1, 2023 after a short illness. He was a proud, generous and loving patriarch and mentor for his family. His two daughters, five grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, sweetheart, sister, cousin and former spouse miss him dearly. He lived by the creed Carpe Diem, or Seize the Day, and lived every day to the fullest.
Dance friends and neighbors are invited to a Remembrance gathering on Tuesday, July 11 from 2:00 to 4:00 at his residence in Ken Lake. For more information, call 360.320.4107.
