Katherine was born in Dodgeville Wisconsin, the daughter of Cornish immigrants. Kate married Joseph D. Davies, also of Cornish background in 1876. He died suddenly in 1891 leaving her with children to raise.

Secondly, Kate married Edwin C. Merrell 25 Oct 1894 in Collins, Story, Iowa.
