Mr. William A. "Bill" Hayes, age 91, of Glen Alpine, and a former resident of Boone, died Tuesday afternoon, October 27, 2009 at Caldwell Hospice & Palliative Care.

Born February 17, 1918 in Watauga County, he was a son of the late George Hamilton and Rosa Ethel Coffey Hayes. Mr. Hayes was a retired mechanic, having worked for Johnson-Cook Ford for 22 years. He was a member of Rutherwood Baptist Church and was an avid gardener.

Surviving are; two daughters, one granddaughter, two grandsons, one step-daughter, two step-grandchildren, one sister, one brother and three step great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife; Violet Carroll Hayes, his second wife Mary Ellen Ward Hayes; two sisters; Texie Cook and Doris VanDyke, two brothers; Buck and Joe Hayes; one half sister; Nannie Cook and four half brothers; Roby Orris, Tom and Don Hayes.

Funeral services for Mr. Bill Hayes will be conducted Saturday morning at 11 o\'clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Harold Hayes and Rev. Burl Greer. Burial will follow in the Rutherwood Baptist Church Cemetery.
