Cynthia A. Gillaspy is the eldest child of Rev. William Gillaspy (b.1793,IN) and Rachel Tobias (b.1812,Wales).
According to (1886) History of Jackson County, Indiana. Chicago:Brant and Fuller:
"Cynthia married Samuel Hougland on April 29, 1852, and together they had ten children [may in fact be nine]. They were members of the Baptist Church."
The 1860 US Census shows Samuel and Cynthia living in Marion Township, Jennings County, Indiana with four children: Nancy J.; William A.; John J.; and Robert J. . Samuel's occupation is given as "Farmer".
US Census records of 1870 list "Sam" and Cynthia A. living in Vernon Township, Jackson Co, IN, with four children and an 11 year-old "Domestic Servent" named Margaret Gillespie. This author believes Margaret is the first daughter of Cynthia's widowed brother, Robert J. Gillaspy. Robert's wife, Carlyle Sellers-Gillaspy died in 1861 shortly after giving birth to their second daughter, Sally C. One week after Carlyle's death, Robert enlisted in the Union Army, leaving Margaret and Sally with no parents to care for them. Sally C. died 8 months later. The evidence suggests that Cynthia stepped up to care for Margaret, as Margaret was born on September 9, 1858, and would have been 11 years-old when her presence in the Hougland home was recorded in the 1870 Census.
