Robert J. Helling, 83, of Olney, died at 2:45 p.m. Sunday
September 26, 2004, at his residence.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Summers-Kistler Funeral Home in Olney. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Church of Olney with Reverend Gary Ryden officiating. Burial with full military rites will be in Crest Haven Memorial Park near Claremont.

Mr. Helling was bom on July 15,1921, in Port Hudson, Mo., the son of Emil and Mamie (Havener) Helling. He married LaVeme Valentine. She preceded him in death in 1963. He married Helen M.
Martin on November 8, 1963, in Olney. She survives.

He was an independent construction contractor and a member of First Church of Olney. He was a World War II Army veteran of the Central Europe and Rhineland Campaigns. He attained the rank of staff sergeant of the 555th Anti-aircraft Artillery and was awarded two Bronze Stars for bravery. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Helling is survived by his wife, Helen M. Helling, of Olney; two sons, Robert E. Helling, of Hartford, and Dennis K. Helling and his wife, Jakalyn, of Denver, Colo.; a daughter, Diane E. Jansen and her husband, Leo, of Evergreen, Colo.; a stepson, Ronald A. Burgener, of Olney; a stepdaughter, Mara Kay Fulk and her husband, Robert, of Olney; a sister, Janette Brown and her husband, Ray, of Mesa, Ariz.; and 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-
great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southeastern Illinois or First Church of Olney.
