On May 31, 1839 he married at St Paul's German Lutheran and Reformed Church in Zeleinople, Butler, PA to his first cousin, Catherine Beighlea/Beighley. Catherine was the daughter of (his uncle and aunt) George and Christina Hoover Beighley. Joseph and Catherine became the parents of Angeline (Ghost), Keziah (Moon), Virginia Jennie (Seifer) and Emma Catherine (Monjar) Beighley.
Catherine died shortly after Emma's birth and Joseph remarried to Lydia Shanor, the daughter of Abraham and Susannah Tucks Fox Shanor. Lydia and Joseph became the parents of Obediah, Mary Rose (Bonner), Susan P., Warren, Miriam Elizabeth, Elias Paul and Elmer Ellsworth Beighley.
