He was trained as a baker in his native Germany and continued this trade in Pennsylvania running his own bakery but eventually he became the head baker for Horn and Hardart. He eventually moved to New York City to continue his fine work for the company and the Automat. He and his wife Rosa bought an island in Maine and chose to have their final resting place in the state of Maine.
