Charles was the son of Charles S. Scott and Dessie Idella Warren, who wed on 25 Oct 1910 in Winamac, St. Joseph Co., Indiana. They had two children together—Charles Monroe, b. 30 Oct 1911; and Claribel Kathryn, b. 24 Jun 1914. The marriage failed after just five years, the divorce finalized on 16 Oct 1915.

Dessie next married Johanas W. Boetsma, the son of Dutch immigrants, on 24 Mar 1917. They had two children together—Earl Phillip, b. 14 Feb 1919; and Joe Harding, b. 28 Jan 1921.

The 1920 Census placed the family on College St. in Culver, Marshall Co., Indiana. Joseph (aka Johanas) Boetsma, 28, was an auto mechanic. Dessie, 29, was home with their combined three children—Charley, 8; Claribel, 5; and Earl, 11 months. Joe Jr. would join the family the following year.

The 1930 Census caught back up with the family in, of all places, Shreveport, Caddo Co., Louisiana. Jo Boetsma, 36, was earning a living as an upholsterer. Dessie, 34, was keeping house. There with their father/step-father and mother were Monroe (aka Charles), 18; Claribel, 16; Earl, 11; and Joe, 9.

Two years after that census enumeration, Charles married Thelma Lucille Railsback on 8 Jan 1932 in Kankakee Co., Illinois.

In 1935, they were living in rural Marshall Co., Indiana, but by 1940, they were living in Locke Twp., Elkhart Co., Indiana. Charles, 28, was working as a "finisher." Thelma, 31, was keeping house.

On his 16 Nov 1940 WWII registration card, Charles Monroe Scott, 28, reported that he was living in Nappanee, Indiana, and employed at the Ligonier Chair Company. He measured in at 5" 11" tall, weighed 140, and had brown hair and eyes and a light complexion. In his obituary, it notes that Charles served during WWII as a Civil Service employee in Hawaii.

(From: The Argos Reflector 12 Mar 1942 p. 3) "Mr. and Mrs. Charles M. Scott of Ligonier visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harland Railsback and brother Donald Sunday."

(From: The Culver Citizen 24 Jun 1942 p. 2) "Family Dinner Honored Father. Father's Day was celebrated with a full house at the Joe Boetsmas when they entertained at a family dinner. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Charles M. (& Thelma) Scott of Ligonier, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Boetsma Jr., of Baer Field, Fort Wayne, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Boetsma and son and Mr. and Mrs. Ronald (& Claribel) Quivey and two daughters (Kathryn, Alice)."

Charles and Thelma divorced sometime between that Father's Day celebration in June of 1942, and Thelma's marriage to Leonard Melville Billett on 10 Oct 1945.

Charles eventually headed west and settled in Tucson, Pima Co., Arizona in 1953 (per his obituary). I found a Charles M. Scott, 38, living at 129 S. Olson in Tucson on the 1950 Census. He was noted as an upholsterer in an upholstering camp. He was the right age, born in Indiana, and doing upholstery work, all of which fit. With him was wife Cathleen, 27. He must have gotten to like the Tucson area, and after the camp ended, he went back to Indiana briefly before moving to Tucson in 1953.

The Charles M. Scott in this clipping was the same age as the subject of this bio. I only include it as a possible address for Charles in 1958. (From: Tucson Citizen 26 Apr 1958 p. 2) "Four Men Draw $400 In Fines. Four motorists who pleaded guilty to drunk driving charges yesterday were each sentenced to pay $100 fines and serve 10 days in jail. City Magistrate Clague Van Slyke sentenced Charles M. Scott, 46, of 4502 E. Juarez St. … Scott was also found guilty of a drunk charge and given a 30-day suspended sentence."

Charles did go back to Indiana for visits with his mother, sister Claribel and half-brothers Earl and Joe Boetsma. (From: The Argos Reflector 10 Jul 1958 p. 5) "Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Quivey and Alice were Charles M. Scott of Tucson, Arizona, and Mrs. Joe Boetsma, Sr." (From: The Culver Citizen 16 Jul 1958 p. 5) "Charles M. Scott of Tucson, Ariz. is spending two weeks with his mother, Mrs. Joe Boetsma, Sr. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Boetsma and daughter, Ann Elizabeth, of Marietta, Ohio were weekend guests with him." (From: The Argos Reflector 27 Oct 1955 p. 7) "Visitors last week in the Ronald Quivey home were Mr. and Mrs. Charles M. Scott of Tucson, Arizona." (From: The Culver Citizen 20 Jul 1960 p. 11) "Charles M. Scott of Tucson, Ariz., is spending a two weeks' vacation here with the Ronald Quivey family, other relatives, and friends."

No wife or children are mentioned in Charles' obituary. He died in Tucson on 3 Jan 1988 at age 76.
