Helen L.Bachorik Battle Creek, age 91, of Battle Creek, died Monday, December 17, 2007 in Orlando, Florida. She was the daughter of Paul L. Pike and Laura H. Mohler. Helen was born in East Leroy and grew up on her
family's farm there. She attended East Leroy's oneroom
Blackett School through eighth grade, graduated from Lakeview High school in 1934, and received a Bachelor's Degree in Home Economics from Michigan State College in 1939. She earned a Master's Degree in Counseling from Northwestern University in the late 1940s. She began her teaching career in home economics at Okemos, and after WWII she returned to Battle Creek to teach that subject at
Southeastern Jr. High. From 1955 to 1967, she was a parttime teacher and director at the Battle Creek School
Farm, and she served as a guidance counselor at Southeastern from 1967 until her retirement in 1978.
In addition to her numerous educational and career successes, she made her house a true home. She touched
many lives through her joy in gardening, sewing, cooking, and baking. She excelled in those fields, but
she will be remembered above all for her life-long generosity. Helen was a member of several teachers' associations, including the Calhoun County Counselors Association, the Michigan Personnel and Guidance Association, the Battle Creek Home Economics Association, the Preceptor Laureate Delta chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, Delta Kappa Gamma, and the First Congregational Church.
Her husband of 59 years, Cyril Bachorik, passed away last year. She is survived by a son, Lawrence Bachorik of
Bethesda, MD; a daughter, Paulette Bachorik Blinn of
Orlando, FL; and grandchildren, Justin Bachorik,
Alexandra Bachorik, and Emily Blinn. Her first husband, Tom Miller, died in WWII. In accordance with her wishes, a cremation has taken place, and a memorial
service will be held in Battle Creek next spring.Memorials
may be directed to the Jack K. Mawdsley Scholarship Fund of the Battle Creek Community Foundation. Arrangements are by the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home.
