Francis worked for many years as a tinner. Then in 1846, he decided to move "west" to find new opportunities and headed to Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin where he purchased a farm. He farmed there for 20 years, and then made the decision to move west again to Minnesota. He went to Verona Township in Faribault County, Minnesota and eventually acquired over 300 acres of land and had what was called a model farm. He also had valueable real estate in California.
