James Edwin Bassett was the oldest son of Francis B Bassett and Mary C Boyer. He was born in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin and moved with his family as a child to Faribault County, Minnesota. It was there that he married Sarah S Stowe on July 16, 1870. They eventually moved to California to Santa Cruz County where they had five children (Frank, Mary,Grace,Maurice, and Mabel.
In addition to his wife, Sarah, and son, Maurice - a brother, Jerome Francis Bassett, is also buried at Soquel Cemetery.
