John was the son of Isaac Ripley and Nancy Crews-Ripley and was probably born in Hawkins County, Tennessee. The family removed to Texas in 1846.

John served with Co. G 9th Regiment 73rd Texas Cavalry under Col. Gould as a Private. He enlisted in Hopkins County, Texas, being from Delta County, Texas the latter part of 1862 and served to close. T. (Thomas) H. Terry (of Charleston, Delta County, Texas) witnessed his Confederate Pension Application and stated that he "stayed right to his post until the war closed and we came in together."

John married 1) Hannah A. Roby, 13 September 1866 in Lamar County, Texas. They had one daughter, Virginia Elizabeth (b. abt. 1868). Hannah died ca 1871.

He married 2) Sarah Caroline (Callie) Castleman 21 Oct. 1875 in Delta County, Texas.

John and his family moved to Comanche County, Texas shortly after 1900.
