Bill served in the (CCC) Civilian Conservation Corps as a forest fire fighter, cook, baker, and surveyor. He also served with the Department of Agriculture. In addition to his service with the CCC, Bill served his country in the United States Army during WWII with the 3367th Signal Service Battalion in New Guinea and the Philippines, where he was serving when the war ended in 1945.
Bill retired after 28 years of service as a rural mail carrier, with a total of 38 years of Federal service. In addition to service to his country, Bill was a long time member of First Baptist Church Mauldin where he faithfully served his Lord and the church in many roles. He was also of a member and oldest past master of Empire Masonic Lodge 213, Mauldin, SC. He was an active participant in the civic affairs of his community.
Surviving are three daughters, Barbara Adams and Margaret Ayers of Greenville, Mary Alice Ford and husband, Tony of Simpsonville; three sisters, Frances Mayfield of Simpsonville, Grace Rice of Falls Church, VA and Nell Thompson and husband, Francis, of Greenville; four grandchildren, Jerry Ayers and wife, Anita, Beth Ruffner and husband, Jerry, Angela Thompson and husband, Craig and Anna Ford; ten great grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Kitty Leapard.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by brothers, Albert and Ben Adams; a sister, Maebell Adams White; and a son-in-law, Herb Ayers.
