Son of Ellis [d. 1756, on the march to Ft. Oswego, NY] and Mary Williams Cook (1716-1754).

Ellis Cook was commissioned Lieutenant Colonel, Eastern Battalion, Morris County, New Jersey Militia, January 13th 1776 and appointed to Colonel Thomas' battalion of detached militia July 18, 1776.

On February 1st 1777 he was commissioned Colonel, Eastern Battalion, Morris County, New Jersey Militia, resigning at Princeton November 6th 1777.

He had served on the Committee of Observation for Morris County in 1775 and the New Jersey Provincial Congress in 1776 as well as on the Committee of Safety.

Ellis was twice married,

first to Margaret Griswold Cocker (1735-1777), daughter of Emanuel and Sarah Buckingham Cocker, on July 12, 1753 at Hanover, Morris, NJ

age 65, in his 66th year, therefore born in 1731.
