Jacob Brown was the son of Jacob and Jane Mitchell Brown. He is actually Jacob Brown IV. His great-grandfather Jacob Brown and his grandfather Jacob Brown, Jr. fought in the French and Indian War. His grandfather Jacob Brown, Jr. and his father Jacob Brown III fought in the Revolution where Jacob Brown III was a drummer. Jacob IV also had a son named Jacob that died at the age of 18.

Jacob Brown married Abigail Sturtevant 28 Nov 1816 in Sumner, Oxford, Maine. Abigail was the daughter of Seth Sturtevant and Abigail Cushing Sturtevant. She had two sisters, Sophia Cushing who married Zenas Stetson and Martha Jane who married Captain Hopestill Bisbee. She also had one brother Earl Parcey Sturtevant.

Jacob and Abigail had eight children: Abigail Cushing, Jacob Brown, Sophronia, Betsey R., Amanda, Mary J., Andrew Jackson, and Stillman.

Jacob was only 47 when he passed away; nevertheless, he was preceded in death by his wife and at least four of his children: Abigail, who died at age 16; Jacob who died at age 15; Sophronia who died at age 14; and Stillman who died at age 2. At least two of his children died after Jacob; however, they still died young: Andrew Jackson age 29 and Amanda age 42.

Jacob is buried next to his first wife and with five of his children from his first marriage.

Jacob married Louisa Starbird of Woodstock, Maine on 10 October 1835 a month after his first wife passed away. They had two children together; Abigail Cushing Brown and Louisa J. Brown.
