Adam Gehrig was born in Alhambra, Illinois in 1860. He married Miss Anna Luteiler and the couple born one son, Richard A. Gehrig. The family moved to Chariton County around 1887 where they were pioneers in the town of Mendon. After moving to Mendon, they took in a foster son, Elmer Bills, and would raise him into adulthood. After a short period of farming, the couple moved to town where Mr Gehrig ran a furniture store. He was a member of the Woodmen Lodge and was active in civic, business and social affairs. In 1915, the family moved to Salisbury where they were affiliated with the Brummell Drug Company. In 1924, they purchased the Lyric Theatre, which would become a lifelong business for their foster son, Elmer Bills.
