VISALIA, Calif. - Nina Gibson Cothron died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007, after 89 years of an exceptional life. She was born in Hannibal on April 6, 1918, to Walter and Jennie Gibson, and lived her final years in California with her daughter, Terri.
She loved her family and the wonderful memories they created. Nina will be sadly missed by all.
Nina was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Benjamin "Cotton;" and daughter, Karen Lee Cothron.
Nina is best known for her award-winning tomatoes, her cardinal-adorned fashion sense, her devotion to chocolate-covered cherries, chocolate chip cookies and her indefatigable pursuit of crafts. Her brilliantly created crochet masterpieces are her legacy.
Nina leaves that legacy to her remaining family: children, Connie Cothron of Waterford, Mich., and Terri Cothron and her husband, Mark Van Deuren, of Visalia, Calif.; sisters, Ruth Maddox of Hannibal, Helen Werner of Decatur, Ill., and Cherie Zimmerman of Carson City, Nev.; grandchildren, John Bryant Thomas of Houston, Kimberly O. Flesner, also of Houston, Kelly O. Levinson of Chicago, Jennifer Osantowske of Warren, Mich., Kristine Clarkson of Tampa and Emily Van Deuren of Visalia; great-grandchildren, Erin Rasmussen, Elizabeth and Hollan Thomas, Reina Harding, Carter Levinson, and Hunter and Hannah Osantowske.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Hannibal Nutrition Center. The family requests that donations be sent to the Alzheimer's Association.
