Civil War: Company B and C, 3rd California Infantry

William Bailey was born in January 1844. His Combined Military Service Record indicates nativity as Staffordshire County, England; whereas his Sawtelle Soldiers Home register indicates nativity as Massachusetts. His father was born in Ireland and his mother in England. During the Civil War he enlisted as a private for 3 years at Camp Douglas (Salt Lake City), Utah Territory, August 23, 1864, and was mustered into Company C, 3rd California Infantry, on August 26. Private Bailey was transferred to Company B on October 29, 1864. He was mustered out at Camp Douglas July 27, 1866 (Orton, 536, 545). William filed for a Civil War veteran's pension in Washington State April 30, 1891, and received application No. 1,018,567 and certificate No. 896,683. Soon thereafter he relocated to Los Angeles, California. He was a widowed teamster living at Los Angeles when he was admitted to the Pacific Branch, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, at Sawtelle June 28, 1892 (Home record; 1900 US Census). William died of a cerebral hemorrhage at the veteran's home and was buried in the Los Angeles National Cemetery.
