Son of Parren & Nancy Little Snodgrass Pierce, George (at almost 17 years of age) persuaded his father to consent to his 4 Feb 1864 enlistment as "Company Musician" with Company D, 77th Ohio Infantry. Two of George's older brothers, (Parren's sons by his late wife, Hannah Masters Pierce), had already enlisted in the Union Army.

Sgt John W. Pierce was with Co. C., 25th Ohio Infantry, and had been killed at the Battle of Gettysburg on 1 July 1863.
Sgt Caleb Pierce had enlisted in November 1861 with Company D, 77th Ohio Infantry, & had been wounded at the Battle of Shiloh, 6 Apr 1862, after which he was promoted Sergeant.

Both Caleb & George were at the Battle of Marks' Mill, Arkansas, on 25 April 1864 when George was wounded, whereas Caleb was captured and marched off to the rebel prison at Camp Ford, Tyler, Texas. George was hospitalized at Jenkins' Ferry, Arkansas and died there on 25 May 1864. His burial site is Unknown, but thought to be at the Jenkins' Ferry battleground, along with others who sacrificed their lives to preserve the Union.
