Caleb was the son and 4th child of Parren Thomas and Hannah Masters Pierce, born in Bethel Township.

He served as a Sergeant in Company D, 77th Ohio Infantry during the Civil War. He survived wounds received at the Battle of Shiloh, TN 6 Apr 1862, was captured at the Battle of Marks' Mills, Arkansas 25 Apr 1864 and was marched to the Confederate prison at Camp Ford in Tyler, Texas. He nearly lost his eyesight due to poor nutrition and infection during the imprisonment.

After the war, he married Manerva Angeline Conner 17 Nov 1866, and resettled near Belleville, Wood Co., WV. The children of Caleb and Manerva Angeline Conner Pierce were: Flora V., who married Edward Morris; Emma Jane, who married Jesse Morris; Charles Ellsworth, who married Mary Matilda Byrd; Otha Cassel, who married Leotta Sines; Joseph P., who married Alice Susan Clark; An unnamed infant, who was born and died in Oct 1881; and Evert C. Pierce.

Caleb's brother, Sgt John W. Pierce was killed at the Battle of Gettysburg, and is buried with the 25th Ohio at Gettysburg National Cemetery. Their brother
Pvt George W. Pierce died in May 1864 at Jenkins' Ferry, Arkansas, of wounds sustained in the Battle of Marks' Mills on 25 Apr 1864. George was only 17 years old, and had enlisted with Co. D, 77th Ohio Infantry as company "Musician" 4 Feb 1864, with consent of their father, Parren Pierce.
