Jeremiah was the son of John and Catherine Wilt Stahl, both of whom moved to and died in Stephenson Co., Illinois. On the 13th of Feb. 1853 he married Caroline Pellman. He served during the Civil War in the 92nd IL Infantry, Co E. from 4 Sep 1862 to 24 Jun 1865. He was taken captured near Fayetteville, NC on the 10th of March in 1865 and was released as part of a prisoner exchange at Aitkin's Landing on the 30th of the same month.
