Smith Griffin was a son Edward Griffin (1762-1860) and Deborah Wardell (1773-1812).

Richard Griffin and his wife Mary Smith, United Empire Loyalists, came to Canada from Nine Partners, Dutchess County, NY in 1787 and settled on concession 9 on the Twenty Mile Creek in Grimsby township, Ontario. Their children were Amelia, Abraham, Bethiah, Edward, Nathaniel, Miriam, Isaiah, Smith, Jonathan, Elizabeth, Mary and Richard Jr.

It was this family who founded SMITHVILLE in the township of West Lincoln located on Highway 20 between Hamilton and Niagara Falls. Although first known as GRIFFINVILLE, it was later renamed after Richard's wife's family.

It was Edward "Ned" who felled the first tree, chose the village site, cleared the first acre of land, built the first house, opened a general store and lived his entire life there so credit is sometimes given to him as the real founder of the village.

Edward was married twice. His first wife was Deborah Wardell and their children were Catharine, Edward Jr. Joseph, SMITH (of this memorial), Isaac, William M.D., and Daniel. After his wife's death Edward married Mary Lounsbury and had Jacob, Parmela, Jonathan Wesley and Marrel. Many members of this family and their descendants are buried in Smithville Union Cemetery.

About 1823 or 1824 SMITH married Elizabeth "Betsy" Edmonds (1801-1881) daughter of Richard and Mary Edmonds and native of Glens Falls, NY. After Smith's death in 1859 she married Rev. Ezra Adams of the founding family of Acton, Ontario.
