Marietta Warren was born in Rockingham County, NC on April 10, 1918. She lived most of her youth on Beckham Church Road in southern Henry County, VA. She married Floyd William "Bill" Smith on June 24, 1935. She graduated from the Southern School of Beauty Culture in Norfolk, VA, attended Boyd's School of Commerce, George Washington University, and Patrick Henry Community College. During her career she worked for the Jobbers Pants Company, Rae's Beauty Salon, in the civil service in the Navy in Washington, DC in WWII, was secretary to the late Dr. Francis Teague for 25 years, and worked in the Spanish Lab at Patrick Henry Comminity College for 3 years. She was a member of McCabe Memorial Baptist Church since 1940 where she served as music director for 35 years, Sunday school teacher for more than 60 years, was also organist, pianist, choir director and church historian. She and Bill traveled extensively visiting all continents except Antarctica.
