Mrs. Samuel C. Fessenden

The death of Mrs. Ellen Purdy Fessenden, which occured at her late home in King Ferry, N.Y., on the morning of February 26, 1897, has cast a gloom over our entire community.

Mrs. Fessenden was born in the town of Venice on October 31, 1836. She was predeceased by her twin brother Edwin Purdy in 1881. She was united in marriage to Samuel C. Fessenden on October 12, 1858, and moved into this community where the remainder of her life was spent.

Mrs. Fessenden was a woman of remarkable executive ability. In a quiet, unostentatious way with sound judgment and admirable tact, she was wholehearted in any work enlisting her sympathies, whether in the home, Church or community. In the church she was a consistent member. Her genial presence, cheerful temperament, wise counsel, patient influence, made her enthusiastic and rendered her helpfulness invaluable in any church enterprise.

Although deprived of the privileges of the Sanctuary for more than two years, yet she maintained a keen, abiding interest in the welfare of the Church, down to the time of her death. For years, Mrs. Fessenden has been a great sufferer. Generous in her affection for her family--unselfishly devoted to their interests--she bore her suffering uncomplainingly and with a striking fortitude characterized by a strong will. Few knew of the intense suffering she bore with much cheerful, heroic resignation.

She is survived by her husband, an only son, and two brothers, who have the hearty sympathy of the entire community in their loss. "The memory of the just is blessed."
