An excerpt from "Squatters" of Van Buren County
In the fall of 1836, (Asahel Fellows) temporarily left his family in Michigan to travel into Iowa to purchase a 700-acre claim across the river from present Hotel Manning. He paid an agent named Mr. Anson the sum of $800 for this claim, and returned to Michigan for his family. By May of 1837, they occupied their claim site.
