Lovatus Chapman Allen was born Sept. 21, 1816 in Chittenden county, VT. His was the son of Edward Allen, a Revolutionary War veteran. L. C. did some farm work but his parents allowed him to go to school since he enjoyed it so much. He became a teacher. He married Sarah Dewey in the spring of 1845, while working as a teacher in New Jersey. Then he worked at a woolen factory. In 1850, he took his family with him to Michigan and started farming in York Township near Milan. His brother Harmon had already made a home in Milan, and was one of the founding families. LC grew the usual farm crops, and operated a dairy including cheese making, probably learned back in Vermont. He built a wonderful home on Mooreville Road just west of Milan village, which now contains a historical marker. He was elected school inspector, then Justice of the Peace. In 1862 he was elected to the Michigan state legislature and served in two sessions. He died Sept. 5, 1901 and was buried at Marble Park Cemetery near other family members.
