Was born on January 23, 1923 in Neosho, Missouri and passed away on October 14, 2011 in Sacramento, California. She is survived by her daughter Susie, son Ray, grandson Ryan, sister Barbara Moore (Tiny), three great grandchildren, and various nieces, nephews and other extended family. She was preceded in death by her husband Rex in 1971 and son Danny earlier this year. She was also preceded in death by her four brothers. She was laid to rest at Sunset Lawn Cemetery on October 21, 2011. Velta married Rex Smith on April 9, 1943 in the middle of World War II and moved to Sacramento, California where Rex, a serviceman, was stationed at Mather Field. They remained in Sacramento where they raised their three children. Velta worked for the Pennisi's for many years - first at their produce concession in the Public Market and then later at their delicatessen in Woolworths at 10th and K Streets. Velta retired in 1985. She spent the last 25 years of her life as a resident of the St. Francis Manor Apartments for seniors. She was the longest standing resident of the manor. She was a big fan of both the San Francisco Giants and the Sacramento Kings. She will be missed.
