Malcolm Estes Shafer was born September 7, 1936 in Port Lavaca, Texas. He moved to La Grange in 1941. He had been a resident of Houston, Texas since 1955. He died on Saturday, October 22, 2011.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Frances Malcolm Shafer, father, Oather Estes Shafer, step-mother, Inez Marie Shafer and brother, James Edward Shafer.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Lupe Casillas Shafer and her extended family. Malcolm and Mary met in 1962 and were married in 1965. He was the love of her life. This is a loss too great to measure, but she will be comforted by the memories of a treasured life together.

Malcolm was a Master Mason and member of Lafayette Lodge No. 34, La Grange, Texas since 1958.

He was a 50 year member of the Bricklayer's Union. Malcolm served as Financial Secretary of Local 7, Houston, Texas from 1962 until his retirement in 1982. Malcolm worked tirelessly to help members of Local 7 resolve problems. He was always available, and no problem or question was too trivial for his attention. Bricklayers and their families were always welcome to call upon him to sort out details or provide assistance with questions regarding benefits up to and including help with final arrangements.

A life long music lover; he shared his love of music with everyone he met. Music was a joy and a comfort for Malcolm and he relished drawing people into conversations about music. He possessed a great knowledge of artists, songwriters, and their music, and he loved exchanging views and opinions. He was notorious for engaging strangers in little discussions of music and converting these strangers into friends.

He would want to acknowledge a dear and generous friend, Mrs. Odie Turner. Odie was like an older sister who became his friend when he returned to Houston after his rehabilitation from the accident of 1960. She shared her love of music with Malcolm and was largely responsible for getting him started on the road to a most rewarding and enduring hobby.

Additionally, he would want to remember the long and loyal friendship of Ted and Kim Lau. Ted and Malcolm met when Ted was working his way through college selling sound systems. Ted provided Malcolm with technical support, up to and including introduction to the computer age. Ted continues to provide support, not only technical, but as a dear and loyal friend.
