FRED TOOTHAKER DIED ON TUESDAY. Well known Jefferson County Man Died at his Home in Fairfield -- Buried at Lockridge. Frederick Toothaker died at his home on North Court street Tuesday night shortly before 11 o'clock.....Mr. Toothaker was 86 years of age and his faithful wife is 85, and on her the burden of his going has fallen very heavily.
Frederick Toothaker was born in Charleston, Maine, in October 1825 and when young came with his parents to Iowa. They located in Burlington where young Toothaker grew up. Later the family moved to Middletown, then only a by-station. He was one of the young men who helped to lay the "plank-road" through southern Iowa paralleling the present Burlington lines.
On Jan. 1, 1853 he was married to Miss Nancy Laughray of Beardstown, Ill., and they went to make their home on a farm near Glendale. There they resided until about 18 years ago.....Five children, two of whom have preceded their father in death -- John of Glendale, and Mrs. Rose Hartley, of Lincoln, Neb. Three daughters, Mrs. W. R. Smith of Glendale, Mrs. Ida Hartley of Portland, Oregon, and Mrs. J. R. Parsons of Ruskins, Neb., are left with their mother to mourn.....Methodist church. Remains taken to Lockridge at noon for interment in the Lockridge cemetery.
