A PIONEER OF TWO STATES. Hoxie, Kan. Sentinel.
John W. Toothaker, a pioneer of Sheridan County, died at his home four miles east of Hoxie the morning of August 1st.....Interment was made in the Hoxie cemetery. Mr. Toothaker was born in Bangor, Maine, January 15th 1833 and removed with his parents to Zanesville, Ohio, when five years of age, and when twelve years of age again moved to what is now known as Jefferson County, Iowa, and he grew to manhood and middle age, surrounded by parents, brothers and sisters, and he was married to Rebecca Hickenbottom April 5th 1860. He followed farming and stock raising until 1886, when moved to Kansas, settling on the place where the family now has its home. He leaves a wife, four sons, D.M. [D Melville Toothaker} Toothaker of Visalia, Cal., I. E. [Isaac Edward] Toothaker of Paonia, Col., Charles [Charles Ethan Toothaker] and W. P. [Willis Pearl Toothaker] of Hoxie, and one daughter, M. F. [Margaret F. Toothaker] He was the youngest of thirteen children, only two of which survive him, Fred S. [Fredrick S Toothaker] of Fairfield, Iowa, and Oliver [Oliver Toothaker] of Holdredge, Neb., who arrived two days before his death.
