BURY AVIATOR IN MENOMINEE
-------------------------------------------------

One of the largest and most impressive funerals ever held in the twin cities was that of Arlie Emmes, youthful Menominee aviator who was drowned in a parachute jump on July 5. Services were read at 2 o'clock at the Presbyterian church by the Rev. Mr. Bellos of Manistique, Mich,. The church was filled to overflowing with sorrowing friends of the deceased. The grey metal casket was banked with numerous and beautiful floral tributes which were probably the most elaborate ever seen in the twin cities and which bespoke the high esteem in which the deceased was held by his many friends. The Misses Alice Olson, Ellen Peterson, Margaret and Emeline Frankard, Dorothy Harkins, Clara Holm, and the Mesdames AJ Peterson and Hugo S. Olson, were in charge of the flowers.
During the church service Mrs. M.A. Erickson. Mr. and Mrs. Michael Telot, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Sivertson and Mrs. F.P. Noel sang "When My Life Work is Ended" and "Jesus Lover of My Soul." The casket was borne to and from the funeral car by eight former members of the Boy Scout squad of which the deceased was formerly in charge. They were, Richard Hoskin, Wellesley McCormick, John Wells, George Tjaden, Robert Bruce, Carl Seidl, Jean Worth and Arthur Paquette.
Interment was made in a cedar lined grave in the family lot in Riverside cemetery.
The out of town people here to attend the final rites were, Mrs. Frank Emmes, Mr. and Mrs. Herley Peterson and son Albert, of Sturgeon Bay, Mrs. D. Laviolette and Mrs. Steinke of Detroit.

Arle Emmes was born to Albert Leroy and Ella Bailey Emmes in 1905, Menominee, Mich.. At the age of 15, he and Earl Gustafson entered the aviation picture in the 1920's. The governement at that time was getting rid of its World War I surplus planes. Arle purchased one of these famous Jennys. He became a parachute jumper and wing walker and sat on a trapeze beneath the plane. Al Sporrer, who caught the flying fever from Arle, piloted his planes in exhibitions throughout northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. plus they sold rides. The act became a regular feature of the Fourth of July weekend celebrations at Henes Park .However on July 5, 1926, a boat standing by to pluck Emmes out of the water, did not reach him in time and he drowned in full view of the horrified spectators. He was only 21.
