Old Westbury--Mrs. Catherine Barker Hickox, 74, socialite philanthropist, died of emphysema yesterday at her home, Boxwood Farm.
Mrs. Hickox was the wife of Charles V. Hickox, retired insurance broker. The Hickoxes had lived in Old Westbury since 1934. Mrs. Hickox was a former director of Babies Hospital of the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, Manhattan. She also was a contributor to institutions and charities such as the Art Institute of Chicago and a convalescent home for children, and maintained her own foundation for charitable works, the Barker Welfare Foundation.
Mrs. Hickox was born in Michigan City, Ind., Feb. 4, 1896. She and Hickox were married in 1930.
Mrs. Hickox is survived, in addition to her husband, by two sons, Charles C. of Mill Neck and John B. of Phoenix, Ariz.; two daughters, Mrs. William L. Matheson of Old Westbury and Mrs. Walter L. Ross III of Glen Head, and 11 grandchildren. A mass will be offered in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Roslyn, at 11 AM tomorrow.
