John H. Barker.
Born Feb. 4, 1844. -- Died -- Dec. 3, 1910.

John H. Barker, owner of the Haskell-Barker Car company of Michigan City, Ind., a community which benefited largely from his philanthropy, died at his residence there yesterday of pneumonia.
He was born in Michigan City on Feb. 4, 1844, and when a young man went into the service of the car company which his father, John Barker, had founded shortly before the civil war. When the elder man retired from business about 1875 the son took charge and was in active management of the concern until about a year ago. In addition to his control of this company, he was a director of the First National bank, the First Trust and Savings, and the National Safety Deposit company.
He once was mayor of Michigan City in the eighties, and among the institutions which received large contributions from him were the public library, the Young Men's Christian association, and the churches, especially Trinity church, the Episcopalian cathedral, of which he was a vestryman.
Mr. Barker was married twice, his second wife, who was Miss Katherine Fitzgerald of Manchester, N. H., having died last June. He leaves one daughter, Miss Catherine Barker, 14 years old, and other relatives, including two nieces, Mrs. Nelson Luddington Barnes of Chicago, and Mrs. Harold A. Richardson of London, Eng. A nephew, Norton Barker, is a resident of Michigan City.

LEAVES TWO HOMES TO ONLY DAUGHTER
John H. Barker Made No Will, Deeding Nearly All Property in Trust.

Michigan City, Ind., Dec. 16.--Although it has been supposed that the late John H. Barker, president of the Haskell & Barker Car Company, of this city, left a will, developments indicate that he made no such an instrument. It is now the understanding that Mr. Barker conveyed nearly all his property to be held in trust by the First Trust and Savings Company in Chicago. James B. Forgan, president of the First National Bank of Chicago, will be appointed guardian of Catherine Barker, Mr. Barker's daughter, 14 years old, and Walter Vail, president of the First National Bank, of this city, will be made administrator of the estate.
The value of the estate may never be made public, but the figures are supposed to be $50,000,000. Excluded from the deed of trusts are the Barker mansion here, the farm near this city, and the Barker summer home at Harbor Point, Mich., which, because of their omission from the deed and the fact that there is no will, are inherited by the daughter as the sole heir of her father. Miss Barker is to receive $50,000 a year for maintenance of the homes and the farm, besides an additional annuity of $10,000 for her personal expenses and education. The car plant is to be conducted under the direction of W. J. McBride, vice president.
