John was born in NC as is recorded on the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 Federal Census. The Scotland Presbyterian Church Session Book devoted six pages to a memorial written about John A. Cameron, which states that he was born in Cumberland Co., NC, that his father died while he was still young, and that his mother moved with relatives and friends to Randolph Co., Alabama, and then later to Tallapoosa Co., Alabama, which is where his mother probably died.
