OBITUARY
Departed this life, at their family residence, near the city of Little Rock, on Saturday morning last, aged about 35 years, Mrs. Mary Newton, wife of Thomas W. Newton. The deceased had, but a few hours before, given birth to an infant, and has left a large family of children, and a bereaved husband. A wide circle of relatives and friends mourn her untimely death. She was a daughter of Col. John Allen, of Shelby County, Kentucky, an eminent lawyer, who, soon after the breaking out of the war in 1811, volunteered, like many other brave Kentuckians, in the service of his country. He commanded a regiment in the northern army, and after many distinguished services, was slain. His daughter, the subject of this notice, was one of a numerous family, and emphatically come of a good stock. She inherited much of the spirit and energy of her father, and the pioneers of Kentucky, from whom she was descended. With ardent attachments and strong prejudices, hers was a marked character. The kind mistress, the firm friend, the affectionate wife, the devoted mother, it seldom fails to our lot to record the death of one so generally esteemed - so much beloved in all the walks of private life. A professor of religion at the early age of sixteen years, she continued until her death to be a Christian. From the time that she embraced religion not a day of her life passed without devotion; and it is hopeful consolation of her dear friends, to know that she lived and died in the full persuasion of a happy immortality. With her we may confidently believe, that it was all of death to die, but not all of life to live. - Communicated.
